Girl Fights

It makes me sad to see all the websites on the internet offering videos of girl fights. What's sadder still is that there seems to be such widespread interest in these fights, and that some people seem to get joy out of watching them. It says a lot about the lives such people lead, of what they must go through to get to the point where they see people injuring other people as entertainment.

I've written about the phenomenon of the popularity of internet fight videos on the internet, and I find girl fights to be some of the more disturbing of these "real fight" videos. It just seems wrong for girls to exhibit such physical violence, and not for sexist reasons, either. It's just that such fights were almost unheard of up until recently. Fighting has been something that traditionally only men engage in. Women have always been known as the nurturers, the mothers. It seems to me like violence is not exclusive to the male gender anymore, and this is one form of gender equality that is obviously a step in the wrong direction.

Supposedly, a full eighty percent of school fights that are reported nowadays are fights between girls. There's something very wrong with that statistic, and I believe it points to fundamental attitudes and values gone wrong. We are humans and studies show that it is our instinct to compete for mates, but perhaps this has been taken a bit too far in our societies. If, like my friend tells me, it's true that girls are taught almost from birth to be competitive with other girls, then perhaps a solution would be to encourage more cooperation and appreciation instead!


If we're not careful, we could see an epidemic of brutal girl fights sweep the nation; it already has swept the internet. Which brings us to what we can do to ensure that this doesn't happen. Expert opinion and common sense both tell us that we should communicate with our kids, to ask them questions and discuss with them issues that are important. This is great advice for dealing with street fights.
